Frequently Asked Questions

What is Letters?

Letters is a web application that enables users to send letters and photos to any incarcerated person in the U.S. from any device. We service all correctional and detention facilities in the U.S. This includes all federal, state, and county prisons and jails, and all immigration detention facilities. Simply locate your loved one using our search tool, type your message and/or attach photos, and click send. You can track your letters all the way to their destination.

We use an automated third-party service to print, mail, and track delivery of the letters.

How many free letters can I send?

All our users can send a maximum of three free letters per day.

How do I send a message?

Three simple steps: (1) log-in or create an account, (2) choose your contact, (3) compose your message, and hit “send”!

Will my messages be reviewed?

Ameelio will never look at any messages or pictures sent using our platform. Be mindful, however, that correctional facilities may evaluate the contents of the messages sent to their facilities. Visit our Terms of Service, and Privacy Policy for more details.

How long does my letter take to arrive?

Letters are sent using USPS First Class Mail. Because we use a third-party service to print and mail letters, our delivery time is a little longer than the normal 1–3 business days USPS provides for First Class Mail. Ameelio Letters typically take 4 to 7 business days. Please note that due to COVID-19, your letter may arrive a little later than usual.

How does my letter get to its recipient?

After you finish your message and hit send, we print and mail your letter to your incarcerated loved one. They will receive a physical letter.

Can I track my letter?

Yes. Each letter sent through our platform has a unique barcode that gets scanned by USPS as it travels through the mail stream.

Here is a breakdown of each mail tracking event and description:

  • On its way – The letter request was created successfully and should reach the mailbox within 4-7 business days
  • Delivered to facility– The letter was successfully delivered to the facility
  • Returned to Sender – The letter is being returned to sender due to barcode, ID tag area, or address errors

How much does it cost to send a letter?

Our mission is to eliminate financial barriers to communication, so we offer free letters to all users. As our community grows, we may explore limiting access to a number of free letters a month, but we’re hoping we’ll never have to. If ever our pricing policy changes, we will notify all users via email.

If my loved one’s facility is not in the facility directory search can I still send a letter?

Yes. All you have to do is add the facility address manually. You can send a letter to any facility in the country.
